Tina Porco of Valhalla, NY, died on Saturday evening, April 7, 2012
after a brief illness. She was 92 years old.
Tina was born Sestina Gaudio in San Biase, Commune Fiumefreddo Bruzio,
in Cosenza Province of the Italian region of Calabria on November 25,
1919, daughter of the late Luigi Gaudio and Innocenza Palumbo Gaudio.
She followed her father and two of her brothers to America, arriving
with her mother in 1937, and settling in the Bronx. She married Vincent
Porco, also a native of Fiumefreddo Bruzio, on May 30, 1946 in the
Bronx. They had three children there, Marie, Vincent and Aldo, and they
then moved to Valhalla in 1957.
After her three children were in school, Tina began working part time,
and found that her love of people was best served when she began working
at the A&P store in North White Plains in 1960. She enjoyed her work as
the "express checker" so much, that she stayed with the A&P and Food
Emporium for 47 years, making friends with many customers and
co-workers. As an avid New York Yankee fan, she especially enjoyed
meeting and befriending several Yankee players who shopped at her store,
including Joe Girardi, Bernie Williams and Jeff Nelson. She reluctantly
retired in 2008 at age 88, only after suffering a serious accident.
Tina was loved by all who knew her. Her many friends and relatives all
have stories about her, and not one is negative. She refused to take
sides in family disputes, and was often the one who made matters better.
Her loss will be felt by many, especially her loving family.
She is survived by her three children, Marie Haywood and her husband
Stephen of Rowayton, CT, Vincent L. Porco and his wife Donna of
Valhalla, and Aldo Porco and his fiancee Kim of Valhalla, by six
grand-children, Laura Haywood-Leigh and her husband Christopher of
Arlington, VA, S. Douglas Haywood and his wife Kimberly of Newtown, CT,
Scott Haywood and his wife Janis of Dover Plains, NY, Jeffrey Haywood
and his wife Marilyn of Rowayton, CT, Brad Haywood of Fairfield, CT and
Daniel Haywood of Derby, CT, and by thirteen great-grand-children,
Rebecca, Catherine, Megan and Brynn Leigh, and Connor, Liam, Daisy,
Jackson, Ruby, River, Alexander, Kathryn and Hannah Haywood and by many
many nieces, nephews and God-children.
Tina was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Vincent Porco, her
parents Luigi and Innocenza Gaudio, her sister Assunta, and her brothers
Joseph, Jack and Florestano.
In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations to Holy Name of Jesus Church's School Building Fund, 2 Broadway, Valhalla, New York 10595.
