Paul Mina of White Plains, New York died on June 10, 2020 of natural causes. He was 95 years old.
Paul was born in the Corona Section of Queens New York on May 10, 1925 to Vincent and Mary (nee Badamo) Mina. His family later moved to Tuckahoe. After graduating from Fordham University with a master's degree in Physics, he taught Mathematics and Physics at Iona College before going to work for Bendix Corporation as an engineer. A tragic boating accident in 1951 took the life of his Uncle Louis, leaving Paul's father sole proprietor of the family supermarket business. Paul left Bendix Corporation and his engineering career to help his father in the family business.
Paul was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II at a ship repair base in the Philippines where he was a radio and radar specialist. He was a musician, playing his trombone in ensembles during his tenure. Thereafter, he continued with his music having played solo and in various ensembles over the years. Paul was also an avid golfer and member of Westchester Country Club.
Paul married Theresa ("Terry") Petrocine on May 13, 1950. Together they raised four children, living in Eastchester, New Rochelle and eventually Purchase, New York.
Paul became the sole proprietor of the Pioneer Market Inc. (the family supermarket business) upon the passing of his father Vincent in 1964. He would continue to develop the business and move it to its final location on Garth Road in Scarsdale where it remained until it closed in 1984.The store was a legacy and employment opportunity for countless family members, friends and others during the years of its operation.
A family man first throughout his entire life, Paul and Terry spent time with and vacationed frequently with their children in various locations, including their summer house in Mattituck (Long Island) New York where the family, relatives and friends would gather for days at a time.
Sadly, Theresa passed away in 1981. Paul was able to find love again with Gioia Galgano. They married in Our Lady of Sorrows Church in White Plains, New York, the same church at which they met. Paul often remarked at how blessed he was to have found love twice in his life. He remained happily married to Gioia for the remainder of his life.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Francis and a sister, Rosalie Betti. He is survived by his wife Gioia of White Plains New York; his four children, Robert (Barbara) of Campobello South Carolina, Mary Mina Romano (Anthony, deceased) of West Palm Beach Florida, William (Maxine) of Cortlandt Manor New York, and James (Yvette) of Peconic New York; three grandchildren, Theresa Mary Mina, Noah James Mina, Thomas Paul Mina; and three step-grandchildren, Michelle Finley Bowyer, Travis Finley, and Brandon "Bo" Finley; his brother Vincent (Claire) of Sacramento California; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
