CHARLIE WILLIAM BEVIER, 57, of White Plains, NY passed away suddenly on May 23, 2017. He was born in Kingston, NY to Louis and Marguerite Bevier. He began running competitively when he was 13-years-old and excelled in track-and-field in both middle and high school. His athletic success secured him a full scholarship to Syracuse University, where he was an All-American for four years and set a record in the 10,000m run and the 4x1600 yd. relay. Post-college, he was nationally ranked amongst the top ten runners in the United States in the 10,000m and qualified for the Olympic trials in 1984, 1988, and 1992. He holds the course record in Van Cortlandt Park in the five-mile race. After his competitive career concluded, he continued to be an avid runner for the rest of his life.
Charlie attained his bachelor’s degree in social work from Syracuse in 1982. He joined Lifting Up Westchester in 1988, went on to become a case manager, and ultimately worked his way up to the position of Director of Shelter Outreach and Homeless Services. Over his nearly thirty-year career, he was devoted to the care and protection of homeless individuals and was influential in inspiring many residents to overcome homelessness and achieve independence and success. He was recognized by the National Council on Alcoholism with an award for his work with the homeless population in Westchester County. He was widely respected and admired by his colleagues for his dedication and humanitarianism.
Charlie was a passionate fan of Syracuse University sports along with college and professional basketball. He was an enthusiastic lover of animals and the outdoors. He enjoyed frequent trips to his hometown of New Paltz, NY.
Charlie is survived by his fiancée and long-time companion Liliane Drago of White Plains, NY; her two children, Lauren and Michael; sister Shirley Bevier-Simpson and her husband Leon Simpson of Tilson, NY; brother Louie Bevier of Woodstock, NY; brother Benjamin “Bennie” Bevier of Kingston, NY; brother Alfred Bevier and his partner Tonja Williams of Walkill, NY; sister Jessie Bevier McKoy and her husband Roosevelt McKoy of New York, NY; brother Henry Bevier of Hanover, NJ; countless nieces and nephews; and all of the people whose lives he touched.
Family and friends may call at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave, White Plains on Monday, May 29th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Grace Church, 33 Church St, White Plains on Tuesday, May 30th at 10am followed by burial at Lloyd Cemetery.
