Zieda Brathwaite-Blum

ZIEDA ANITA BRATHWAITE-BLUM passed peacefully away at home on December 29, 2023. She was born March 31, 1924 to George Brathwaite and Stella Stuart who came to the United States from Barbados. Zieda was born at home when George and Stella lived on Webster Avenue, Bronx, New York. The family eventually moved to Third Avenue, Bronx, New York where Zieda grew up. Everyone knows Zieda as "Zi". She graduated from Haaren High School, June 25, 1942. Education was important to Zi. She was determined to have a college education. Thirty three years later, Zi received her college degree from Hunter College.

Zi worked at several factories. She always looked for a better job. She left working in factories and got a job at Bellvue Hospital where she stayed for several years. Her next job was with the Department of Welfare, where she worked for many, many years and retired in 1991 as a supervisor.

Zi loved - books, movies, bowling, traveling, playing scrabble and the casino. She was always reading a book or magazine or the newspaper. Zi was a charitable person and donated money to organizations that were very important to her. She was interested in acting. Zi was an "extra" in two off, off Boadway plays and very briefly was in a television show.

Zi leaves her two daughters, Charelle Mariette (Bronx, NY) and Nayda Mariette-Kellogg (Bronx, New York, formerly Atlanta, GA), two grandchildren, Carl A. Mariette (Bronx, NY), Nayda Mariette ( Kenner, LA) and four great grandchildren, Geraldo Guiterrez, Crystal Mariette, Jasmine Mariette (Bronx, NY), Justin Mariette (Queens, NY) plus several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Zi was predeceased by her husband, Samuel E. Blum, sister Gertrude (Gert) Wong, brothers Victor Sanchez (Sonny) and Dion Brathwaite.

Zi will always be remembered as a gentle, kind, caring person. She will be missed by all.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to all who have posted their remembrances, pictures, calls and prayers.
