Zawditu Gereme

Zawditu Gereme died on Thursday, February 18th, 2021. She was 75 years old. She died in her home in Yonkers, NY. Mrs. Zawditu Zaid Gereme was born from Her Eritrean father Ato Zaid Aradom and mother Weizero Zufan Abraha on January 16, 1945 in the city of Gimma, Kafa province of Ethiopia. In her younger years, she went to Etege Mennen Girls School through high school. As a very studious and brilliant student, Zawditu was granted a scholarship to Beirut Lebanon's American University of Beirut and earned her degree in Nursing specializing in Optometry. Zawditu Gereme was married to her husband, Sebahat Gereme MD. Zawditu and Sebahat had a loving and peaceful marriage. Zawditu was a nurse her entire life and Sebahat, a dermatologist. They both emigrated to the United States with their son, Ezana who was 2, from Ethiopia in 1973. Zawditu alternated between being a stay at home mom and nursing. She loved taking care of people at home and at work. Zawditu was a terrific cook. Ethiopian/Eritrean Cuisine were her favorite. Zawditu and Sebahat were blessed with having a strong and diverse network of good people in their social network. They loved to entertain at each others' homes. Good food and decades long friendships made those parties rich experiences. Zawditu carried on with grace and dignity after the passing of her husband in 1999. She revived her nursing career and stayed in our family home in Scarsdale, NY. Our dog Alaska was a loved addition to the family in 2004. Zawditu loved taking car rides. She always preferred to sit in the passenger seat than drive. Zawditu and Sebahat are survived by their son, Ezana Gereme. Zawditu's Funeral will be held at The Greek Orthodox Church of Our Savior 2195 Westchester Avenue East Rye, NY 10580 on Saturday, March 13th at 11am. Immediately after the Church Service, Zawditu Gereme's burial will be at Ferncliff Cemetery 280 Secor Road Hartsdale, NY 10530 right beside her beloved husband Sebahat.
