Young Hwan Oh, aged 77, a long-time resident of White Plains, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2022 at White Plains Hospital.
Young was born on January 30, 1945, in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea and studied at Incheon National University majoring in Education. He dutifully served in the Korean Air Force where he was chosen, out of 800 applicants, to teach the children of general-grade officers. In 1971, he went on to work at an import/export company in Seoul where he met his wife, Sung Eun Cho, and married in 1974.
In 1975, they welcomed their son, Sae Wook, in Seoul and then immigrated to the United States in November 1976. In 1977, they welcomed their daughter, Dorothy, who was born in the Bronx.
Young moved his family to White Plains in 1979 and became the owner and operator of the Orient 5 Company, an Asian food retail store in White Plains. He and Sung Eun devotedly ran this business, serving the Westchester community, for 26 years until their retirement.
Young greatly enjoyed the outdoors. He treasured the days he could go hiking, fishing, camping and golfing with his friends and family. Having possessed a natural talent for music, he loved singing and playing the piano, guitar and accordion.
He is survived by his wife, Sung Eun Oh, son, Sae Wook Oh, daughter-in-law, Zenka Paku, daughter, Dorothy Pyun, son-in-law, Kevin Pyun, grandson, Declan Pyun, and granddaughter, Dillon Pyun.
