Walter “Curly” Evans Crawford of Elmsford, New York went home to heaven on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 peacefully after a brief illness. Known to his children and grandchildren as “Pop”, a native of New Rochelle, New York, Walter was born on December 10, 1930 to the late Walton Crawford and Margaret Cullen Crawford. He was educated in New Rochelle graduating from Isaac E. Young High School before joining the Air Force and serving in Japan during the Korean War. In 1958 he joined the Tuckahoe Police Department as a patrol officer and climbed the ranks being promoted to Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant and finally Chief of Police. He retired on May 31, 1993. Walter loved watching Westerns and game shows. He loved to travel and take day trips and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Walter was a kind and generous soul who was loved by many. On August 26, 1956, he married Katherine Jeanette Crawford (nee Desmarais) at St. John’s Church in White Plains. Walter is survived by his wife Katherine and is the devoted and loving father of Margaret Crawford, Kathleen Simonetti (Anthony), Diane Fennell (Tom) and Donna Eastman (Richard), grandchildren John Sia Jr., Christopher Sia, Mary Fennell, Katherine Fennell and Sean Fennell. He is also survived by his brother and sister in law, Donald and Anne Rowan and his beloved dog Waffles. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Frederick Crawford.
To honor Walter’s life, family and friends will gather at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 72 East Main Street, Elmsford, NY 10523 on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm and Sunday, October 26, 2014 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 27, 2014. Interment to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Walter’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
