Vivian Gertrude (Mellis) Murray, born in Mount Vernon NY, daughter of Gertrude Adelaide (Doenges) Mellis and William Mellis, died peacefully in East Haven, CT on November 24, 2014 as a result of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. A resident of Greenburgh, NY for almost 60 years, she worked for several decades as an executive secretary for the Greenburgh NY School District #7 at both Woodlands High School and at Webb School in Hartsdale, NY. Having been raised as a normal hearing child by her deaf and hard of hearing mother and father, Mrs. Murray was fluent in sign language and was able to use this skill to assist deaf and hard of hearing people in many situations. She was married for 50 years to Creighton E. Murray, also of Mount Vernon, a veteran of the US Army Air Force, who predeceased her in 1995. Surviving her are her son, John E. Murray of Annapolis, MD, daughter Judith L. Barbosa and son-in law James A. Barbosa of Guilford, CT, as well as grandchildren Colin (Traci) Murray of Aldie, VA, Melissa Murray of Bluemont, VA, Jessica Barbosa of Stamford, CT, and Jennifer Barbosa of New York City, NY. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 29th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue, White Plains. Funeral Service will be Sunday at 12 pm at the funeral home followed by burial at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the NY School for the Deaf, or to Lifechoice Hospice at Lifechoicehospice.com.
