Terence Joseph O'Connor of Hartsdale, known as Terry to his friends and as Papa to his grandkids, died on Monday, November 3, after an intense battle with cancer. Born on April 7, 1940, he was the first child of Joseph and Veronica O'Connor who lived in Chicago and suburban Baltimore before settling in Scarsdale, NY. A 1958 graduate of Scarsdale High School, Terry earned a bachelor's degree from Tufts University, two master's degrees, and eventually a doctorate. A life-long love of learning prompted him to pursue Drew University's program in medical humanities. His 2011 dissertation was honored as the best- written dissertation at Drew that year. Terry's interest in health care was not an abstract matter. He was a health care administrator who worked at such institutions as South Bronx Mental Health Council, St. Mary's Hospital for Children, St. Luke's-Roosevelt, St. Patrick's Nursing Home. In addition to his day job, Terry taught courses in hospital administration to thousands of aspiring health care professionals over the last three decades. In fact, he was in the process of teaching adjunct courses this semester when he became ill. In addition to his wife of 25 years, Denise O'Connor, Terry is survived by five children -- Christopher of Allentown, PA, Charlotte of Smithtown, NY, Colin of Flushing, NY , Carolyn of Hartsdale, NY and Suzanne of West Harrison, NY, and seven grandchildren. His brothers John of Alpharetta, GA, and Brian of Fairport, NY, and his sister Carol of Albuquerque, NM, also survive him. Memorial Service, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Friday 12 noon. Interment private. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. would be appreciated.
