Taylor Calder

Taylor Alan Calder - a devoted son, brother, and father and a proud lifelong resident of Queens, NY - passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025 at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital in Oceanside, NY. He was born in Augsburg, Germany on October 15, 1962, son of Nancy (nee Sanborn) Galvin and the late Gerald Calder.

Throughout his life, Taylor was an enthusiastic fan of the Oakland Raiders and A's, as well as the Boston Celtics and Bruins. His commitment to his teams inspired his love of watching games, collecting memorabilia, and curating a household adorned largely in silver and black. In his early years, Taylor's love of sports translated to the schoolyard, the baseball diamond, and the football field where he was known for an arm that could throw more than 60 yards and where he earned his lifelong nickname, "Clutch." In his teen and adolescent years, Taylor's love of music blossomed, and one band - Van Halen - rose to the top of a long list of eclectic musical favorites that spanned the 60s to the 90s including Frankie Valli, George Harrison, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Joe Satriani, Santana, and more. Taylor was always happy to find a fellow fan or create one.

As an adult, Taylor worked as a courier for FedEx in New York, NY, where he built many cherished friendships, gathered fond (and some not-so-fond) memories, and collected stories of celebrity encounters that he loved to share time and time again.

In more recent years, Taylor took an interest in religion and family history. He held the cross close as a symbol of his faith, and deeply valued the community he built through his interest in Christianity. He loved doing research on his family tree, excited by the promise that a new photo, article, or YouTube clip could help him better understand his loved ones and himself. Taylor was a fighter, living to the age of 62 after surviving a gunshot wound in the early 1980s and enduring a four-decade-long battle with Lymphadema. His longevity was a testament to his strength, courage, and will to live a life alongside his loved ones.

Taylor was a man of many friends, often going to great lengths to maintain lifelong bonds and always striking up conversation in pursuit of new faces to add to his closest circle. He valued connection and cherished the many people that extended a hand or a shoulder during good times and bad, over the last several years especially.

Along with his beloved mother Nancy Galvin, Taylor is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tyler and Michael; his brother and sister-in-law, Fleming and Nancy; his half-brother Jordan, half-sister Tori; stepmother Vicki; and other beloved family members including Mira, Adam, and Danny. Along with his father, Taylor was predeceased by the recent losses of his beloved uncle Robert Ashby, stepfather Tom, cousin John, and his aunt Florie. 

His family will gather with friends on Sunday, January 26, 2025 from 1-4pm at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue, White Plains, New York; where a prayer service WILL BEGIN at 2:30pm. Inurnment will be private in the Ferncliff Cemetery Mausoleum, Hartsdale, New York, on a future date chosen by his family.
