Swaraksha K. Jindal of Tappan, NY passed away on November 22, 2023 at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY. She was 86 years old. The cause of death was leukemia.
Swaraksha was the youngest of six children: two older sons and four daughters, to Labhu Ram Ohri and his wife (proper name unknown, but nevertheless, greatly cherished). Swaraksha was born on February 14, 1937. However, her eldest brother mistakenly entered her birthday as March 8, 1937 when he registered her for school. Hence, the latter date is her official birthday. She was born in Shri Hargobindpur, District Gurdaspur, Punjab, India.
Swaraksha K. Jindal was a pediatrician. She studied at the Government College for Women in Ludhiana for Pre-Medical Studies from 1953-1955. She completed her studies at the Medical College in Amritsar from 1955-1960. After graduating, Swaraksha did a house job in Lady Harding Hospital in New Delhi for two years. She then worked in CHS in New Delhi for two years. Swaraksha came to the U.S.A. in 1964. For several years, she completed fellowships and residencies in Louisville, Chicago and St. Louis. She passed her American Boards in 1967.
Swaraksha returned to India to marry Satya P. Jindal on August 18, 1968. He had just completed his Ph.D from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. He was a biochemist. Shortly thereafter, Satya left for America in search of work. Swaraksha joined Satya in America in November 1969 with her newborn daughter, Manjula.
After a stint in Massachusetts, the family lived in South Carolina for several years. Swaraksha worked at a local hospital until the family moved to Tappan, New York in 1975 for her husband’s job with the New York State Office of Mental Health. She worked at Letchworth Village when she first moved to New York. She started her own medical practice in Bronx, New York in 1979, a year after her youngest child, Gagan, was born. With her lifelong hard work and determination, her practice thrived for over 34 years.
Swaraksha and Satya lived in their home since September 1976, until they passed away; Satya in August 2010 and Swaraksha in November 2023. Swaraksha K. Jindal is survived by her daughter, Manjula Jindal, and her two sons Kumud and Gagan Jindal. She is also survived by her three grandchildren: Nicholas, Sophia and Alexa.
Swaraksha K. Jindal was a lifelong devout Hindu. Like her medical practice and her family, her faith was a central part of her life, all her life. She belonged to the Hindu Samaj Mandir of Mahwah, in Mahway, New Jersey.
Swaraksha loved to travel. Before she married, she had seen most of the United States, Europe and North Africa. The family also traveled together throughout the years. In addition to numerous family trips to India, the family traveled to Alaska, the Caribbean, South America, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
