Sandra Priest was born on January 27, 1929 in Providence, Rhode Island to Mildred Priest Marcus and Ira Marcus. She died on August 31, 2017. She worshipped her husband Frederick Phineas Rose, a prominent New York builder and philanthropist, to whom she was married rapturously for fifty-one years. She adored her children: Deborah (Jan Stolwijk), Jonathan F.P. Rose (Diana Rose), Samuel Priest Rose, who died in 1994, and Adam R. Rose (Peter McQuillan). Her grandchildren, Ariel Flores Zurofsky (Adam Zurofsky) and their children, Maxwell, Jasper and Phoebe, Rachel Rose and Sarah Stolwijk Rose gave her additional joy. Her brother Jerome Priest, who predeceased her, was an important part of her life. Her stepsiblings, Joan Frank Milner, Donald Bauman Frank and Gerald Bauman Frank also predeceased her. Her loyal friends were dear to her. Her life's work was devoted to the teaching of reading to inner-city children in the profound conviction that all children could learn to read, if taught well. Her service on many charitable and not-for-profit boards was infused by her carefully thought out and clearly expressed opinions. The interment was private at her request.
