Rui George Soares of Valhalla, NY, loving husband to Jennifer Soares, and “father extraordinaire” to Fedelina (6) and Cristiano (2), passed peacefully at 46 years of age on June 1st, 2019 surrounded by family and friends. Rui was born May 6, 1973 in Yonkers, NY. Having lost his father, Horacio Soares, at the age of 6, Rui was raised by his mother, Maria Soares of Yonkers, NY. Rui experienced, learned and valued the importance of family throughout his life, which is evidenced by this article in the WSJ: https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/modern-family-some-companies-move-to-gender-blind-leave-for-new-parents-1519225200 Rui attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics in 1995. The friendships he developed with his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers proved to be lifelong bonds, leading him to dedicate much of his post college years giving back to his fraternity through volunteer projects, serving on the House Corporation, and driving the growth of the fraternity. If you were lucky enough to know Rui well, you likely thought of him as one of your closest friends. You also knew he was a fantastic storyteller, often remembering the details of your life better than you. While he tried, Rui wasn’t the strongest athlete (unless you count bowling, which come on, who does?). He had an irrational love for the Mercury Tracer and enjoyed skiing. As passionately as he loved the NY Mets and NY Giants, Rui equally loved to disparage the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies (maybe even a little more). Rui, sometimes affectionately known as ‘Mike,’ cared more for others than he did himself. Rui was an extraordinary husband, father and friend. Rui set the standard for all of us to live up to, putting other people and loved ones first, and always lending a helping hand. Rui spent most of his professional life working for Kraft and Deloitte. He was recognized for his contributions and commitment to developing others on multiple occasions. Rui is also survived by his mother, Maria Soares of Yonkers, NY, his sister Michelle (David) Vanslette of Wayland, MA and their children Eden and Reid, his brother Horacio (Angela) Soares of St. James, NY and their children Lucas and Ava, his mother and father-in-law Cory and John Cucurullo, his brother-in-laws Matthew Cucurullo, John Cucurullo, and his sister-in-law Teresa (Paul) Barbuto and their children Natalie, Joseph, and Robinson. Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Wednesday 3-8 PM. Funeral Mass, Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, NY on Thursday 10 AM. Interment, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
