Rose 'Serpoui' Jamgochian , 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2018. She was born on March 20, 1929 in New York City to Mardiros and Altoon Azarian who were survivors of the Armenian Genocide. Rose grew up in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan with her brother Martin Azarian (deceased). After graduating from Textile High School, Rose held various secretarial positions at law firms in NYC. During her single days she was known as "Mombo Rose" as she loved to dance at the ballrooms in NYC such as the Palladium Ballroom, Roseland Ballroom, Audubon Ballroom, Copacabana and Port Said. Rose met her husband George in Asbury Park, NJ at an Armenian singles weekend. They got married in 1954 in Detroit, MI, where George is from, and moved to NYC with Rose's parents for a short while until they found their home in Elmont, NY to raise their three children. Rose spent as much time as she could visiting her mother and father in Rockaway Beach. She was happily married for 62 years to George whom she referred to as 'my man'. While living in Elmont, Rose got her cosmetology license and cut hair at several local hair salons. She turned that into a social and entertaining event for her customers with lots of fun and laughter. These customers eventually became her good friends. Rose and George moved from Elmont to Hartsdale, NY in 1996 and became members of St. Gregory The Enlightener Armenian Church in White Plains, NY. Rose lived with George in Hartsdale up until the time she was stricken with Alzheimer's and had to be put in a nursing home in Mamaroneck, NY in 2015. She was loved and cared for at the nursing home with daily visits by George until his death in June 2016. Rose's biggest enjoyment was being with her family. She loved being a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a cousin and an aunt. She also loved her friends and was there for them anytime. She loved life.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband George and her brother Martin (Vartan) Azarian. She is survived by her three loving children; George B. Jamgochian and his wife Kim; Karen Turrisi and her husband Larry, and Lynn Aslanian and her husband Rich. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren; Lauren, Marielle, Lily, Michael, Vanessa, Georgie, Brian and Lia as well as her niece Carol Bratter and son Alexander.
Visitation will take place at St. Gregory The Enlightener Armenian Church in White Plains, NY on Monday, October 22nd, 2018 starting at 10am.
