Robert Westly Fernandez born December 24, 1938 and was a lifelong resident of the city of Yonkers, New York to Mayme Fernandez his mother and Eugene Fernandez his father. Robert was the third youngest of four boys. His brothers Walter Ernest and Paul who he often talked of their childhood experiences and memories. Robert attended the Yonkers public schools where he graduated from Yonkers High School. During his high school years he was well known for his Athletic ability was named "Most Physically fit in NYS" in 1956 and being a Gymnast so good he could work the rings, the horse and parallel bars. He would go on to perform at West Point showcasing his talent.
In 1960 Robert enlisted in the United States Army serving his country for 3 years accomplishing the rank of Sargent and performed his duty in the role of military police. Just around the time of enlisting he managed to find his future wife, Frances Fayerweather, which would last for 62 years of marriage, all the way in Rhode Island. The two married on December 8, 1962 lived in Albuquerque during his military career then later returned to Yonkers and raised a family with two boys David and Greg. Robert was a very family-oriented man and always enjoyed being around his family engrafting his daughter-in-law, Lisa as one of his own. He would often take his boys fishing, play sports, and would share what he knew about working on cars and made sure we all attended church as a family. Even into his seasoned years he did his best to make sure the family was together as often as possible. He really loved his Granddaughter Kristia, his pride and joy who outshined his own two boys in her own special way.
He established a career with the United States Postal Service in Mount Vernon, New York at the Westchester Sectional Center working his way through the ranks from sorting letters to supervisor, eventually working his way into the finance department, then to auditor, traveling the Hudson Valley, and finally serving as general service window manager of the Main Post office in Yonkers in which he retired after 36 years of service.
At the age of 18, Robert gave his life to the Lord and was Baptized at Messiah Baptist Church in Yonkers, New York. Over the years Robert's love for the Lord grew and developed into the man that could not be separated from his relationship with Jesus Christ. In 1989 he made the journey with his family to find a new church home, Redeeming Love Christian Center in Nanuet, N.Y. Under the teaching of the founding Pastors Clinton and Sarah Utterbach. It was here he gained a deeper understanding of the Word of God and relationship with Christ and would be baptized by immersion in water again signifying his allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ in 2005. Robert held a great reverence for his current Pastors Edward Fundstein and Greg Carr's leadership and their administration. During his tenure at RLCC he volunteered in several positions, but none so much the last role he served in as Head Counter which he enjoyed immensely, to the point he would let us (his family) know weekly that he was going to "work" on a specific day. We all gained a sense of the importance of his role as he would allude to it from time to time. He has spent many years in positions making many lifelong friends here at RLCC, of which he would speak highly of. He truly loved his church family!
