RHODA FROHLINGER
Born March 27, 1931, she died on March 13, 2021 after more than five years battling Alzheimer's disease brought on by sepsis. Younger child of Sarah (Shaler) and Maurice Forman, Russian immigrants, she was a long time resident of the Bronx, later residing in Hartsdale, New York and then Boynton Beach, Florida. Rhoda was the first member of her family to attend college. She graduated from Hunter College in 1952 one year after marrying her college sweetheart, Lewis Frohlinger who died in 1994. Rhoda, a master teacher, taught 3-5th grade, Spanish, Science and Humane Education at P.S. 83 in the Bronx for 25 years. Following retirement she taught at Lehman College, preparing the next generation of educators.
Rhoda enjoyed the arts, watching and participating in sports, travel, spending time with loved ones, cooking and shopping. She adored clothing, inspired by her mother, an accomplished seamstress who made many of Rhoda's beautiful garments. She loved animals, especially cats, and though fearful of dogs became attached to Zoe, her first "grand-dog." She was an independent thinker, strong and personable who loved to laugh, and made friends easily. She was very popular throughout her school years and belonged to a social houseplan at Hunter, where she made several life-long friends and met Lewis. She was a natural athlete who was awarded 3 collegiate medals. Small in stature but fierce when the need arose, she had no problem punching boys in the nose as a young girl, with her mother's blessing. She also knew how to pick herself up and begin again, as situations changed. Shortly after Lewis' death Rhoda met Jack Feder. They were devoted companions for 25 years, he predeceased Rhoda by exactly two weeks. Rhoda is survived by her two daughters Kim and Mara, sons-in-law Michael Gurrieri and Mark Graham, granddaughter Lindsay Graham, and her older sister Esther Singer. Her passing has left a great void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, including her hundreds of students.
