The Reverend John Janney Lloyd passed away on December 18, 2019 at the Bristal in White Plains at the age of 98. Father Lloyd was born on April 10, 1920 in Wakayama, Japan. He was the third of seven children born to Episcopal missionaries, Reverend James Hubard Lloyd and Louisa Barton Myers Lloyd.
Father Lloyd graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and would later attend and graduate from Virginia Seminary and Harvard Divinity School. Upon hearing about Pearl Harbor, he left the seminary and enlisted as a language officer in the Marine Corps. Father Lloyd was in the fourth wave of men to arrive at Iwo Jima.
In 1953, he married Elisabeth Joy Chaplin at Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. He worked for over 60 years as an Episcopal priest.
Father Lloyd is survived by his wife Elisabeth, son John Lloyd, wife Jane Talcott, of Brooklyn, NY, daughter Elisabeth Inomata, husband Tad Inomata, of Fort Lee, NJ, son David Lloyd, of Blacksburg, Virginia, daughter Julia Lloyd, husband Nicholas Marino, of Rye, NY, and daughter Rebecca Lloyd, husband Gary Green, of Carmel, NY. He was a loving grandfather to five grandchildren, Andrew Inomata, Margaret Inomata, Elizabeth Narvaez, James Narvaez and Claudia Narvaez and he baptized his great granddaughter Indi Lee Inomata this past Easter.
Father Lloyd will be remembered for his dry wit and sense of humor, a love for debate over politics, and most especially for his wisdom and thoughtful expression of God's grace in the world around us.
A celebration of Father Lloyd's life will be held at St. James the Less Church, 10 Church Lane, Scarsdale, New York on December 22, 2018 at 1:00 PM.
