Mrs. Piasur Gartey Gborplay popularly known as Maa Gartey was the first of four children born to Kpiatee and Kwipue Dahn on October 9th 1942 in Diaplay, Nimba County, Liberia.
At ten years old, Piasur moved to Ganta to live with the man who will later become her husband, Karmeh Gborplay. Married at a young age of 17 years and gave birth to six children, four boys and two girls.
After the ten years of brutal war in Liberia, Piasur and her children fled to neighboring country Ivory Coast; where she lived till she moved to live with her oldest child, Helena Mensah in Yonkers New York in 1992, and her remaining children moved to a refugee camp in Ghana.
Maa Gartey and the Mensah family moved to White Plains New York in the year 1998.
In the year 2000, Maa Gartey lost her daughter in Ghana, and when she heard the news of her daughter's death she had a stroke and her life was never the same. She was in pain for the rest of her life. With all the pain and suffering her faith was strong, never gave up. She knew God will never abounded her. She prayed all days and nights, during meals, baths and drinks.
Maa Gartey calls everyone by name during her prayers, and if anyone blesses her, your name will always be mentioned in her daily prayers.
Maa Gartey became unresponsive on ABT for infection. She was taken to White Plains Hospital Emergency Room where she answered the call to glory at 3 pm on December 26, 2022.
She leaves to mourn her beloved children Helena D. Mensah, Thomas T. Gborplay, Lee Gborplay, Ernest Gborplay; grandchildren Vanessa Z Messias, Scarlet Cole, Ayo Gborplay, Emmanuel Nyanway, Albert Kofi Mensah, Zotah Gborplay, Kwesi Max Mensah, Akosua Lena Mensah, Precious Adjoa Mensah, Princess Adjoa Mensah, Lydia Gborplay, Lee Gborplay Jr, Johnny Gborplay and ten great grandchildren. She also left to mourn her surviving brother, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
