Phyllis M. Yavner (February 13, 1938 - January 22, 2025)

Phyllis M. Yavner, beloved mother, grandmother, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on February 13, 1938, in Brooklyn, NY, Phyllis was a compassionate and resilient woman whose life was defined by her commitment to her family, her work, and her friends.

In June of 1961, Phyllis married Stanley Yavner, her devoted husband of nearly 57 years. Together, they raised two children, Jodi (husband Alan) and Laurence (wife Alyssa), who were the pride of Phyllis' life. Her love and guidance extended to her three cherished grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica, and Mac, who brought her great joy.

Phyllis was a passionate educator, earning her degree in Education from Hunter College in New York City. She spent her early years teaching in Massachusetts, where she was the first female itinerant teacher in the Boston area. From there, she and Stanley moved to New City, NY, where they made their home for their family. Throughout her career, Phyllis worked primarily in Rockland County, where she dedicated much of her life to supporting the visually impaired through her role at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). She was deeply committed to making the world a more accessible place for all.

One of Phyllis' most notable accomplishments was founding the TRIPS bus service, a transportation program designed to serve retired and physically disabled individuals in the community. Her initiative continues to help countless individuals maintain their independence and stay connected with their peers and the world around them.

In 2020, Phyllis moved to Atria Briarcliff, where she spent the final years of her life surrounded by caring staff and fellow residents. Phyllis will forever be known as "the teacher" by all. She was loved by all who knew her, and her impact on her family, friends, and community will be felt for generations to come.

Phyllis is predeceased by her beloved husband Stanley, who passed away in February 2018. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and a legacy of compassion, dedication, and love. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Private burial services will be held at Sharron Gardens in Valhalla NY, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Stanley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Phyllis' memory to BRIDGES of Rockland County at https://www.bridgesrc.org/ and directed to General for Association for the Visually Impaired.
