Phyllis Sheck

Phyllis Florence Sheck, 93 years old, of Purchase, NY, passed away peacefully in her home with her family by her side, on July 21, 2024.

She was born on August 24, 1930, in the Bronx, NY, to Belle and Charles Sperling. She studied at Hunter College and after graduation married Burtin Sheck in 1951. While raising their three children, she earned a Masters degree in Developmental and Remedial Reading from Hunter College and a Masters degree in Science in Education from City College. She worked at Children’s Village and eventually became the reading specialist at the Ridge Street School in Rye Brook, NY, where she remained until her retirement. In 2000 she established the Phyllis Sheck Learning Center where she tutored a wide variety of students for many years. She and her husband took great pleasure working with their son at his business. All these activities were carried out with great alacrity, dedication, and care.

She is survived by her children, Laurie Sheck (and her husband Jim Peck), Amy Sheck (and her husband Don Hornstein), Paul Sheck; her grandchildren Maia Peck (and her partner Gregory Serweta), Alex Hornstein (and his wife Hannah Liongoren), Eli Hornstein (and his wife Brianne Edwards), Dana Sheck, Margo Breilyn (and her husband Aaron Breilyn); also by her great grandchildren, Lumen Hornstein, and Lucca and Kai Breiyln, and her beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Burtin Sheck, grandson Jacob Sheck, sister Bernice Checkoway, niece Joyce Dinsmoor, and grandniece Emma Howell.

The memorial service is planned for Sunday July 28 at 10 am at the Kol Ami chapel at 252 Soundview Ave, White Plains, New York.

The family gives thanks to the medical teams and caregivers who brought warmth, light, and insight into our lives these past months.

In honor of Phyllis’ career and dedication as a reading teacher, donations in her memory may be made to Reading is Fundamental (rif.org).
