Phillip E. Leahy

Phillip Leahy, 79, of Somers died on June 17, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Leahy, and his son Phillip, of Mohegan Lake. He leaves his brother, Daniel Leahy, and nephews, James Leahy and Daniel Leahy. Born is Manhattan to Anna and Phillip Leahy and raised in the Bronx, Phil graduated from Fordham Prep and went to obtain his Masters Degree in Mathematics, and Doctorate in Education from NYU. He taught at several local public and private high schools before moving into administrative positions, including five years as Superintendent of the Englewood NJ schools. In 1997 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the NYS Council of Schools Superintendents. After thirteen years as Superintendent of schools for the Newburgh City School District, Dr. Leahy joined the faculty at NYU, Department of Educational Administration. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY at 12 noon on Friday, June 20, 2014. The family will receive friends in the courtyard behind the chapel at 11AM. Burial will follow immediately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Somers Fire Department's Emergency Medical Service of Somers, NY.
