Peter Agoston, a 53-year resident of Scarsdale, died at White Plains Hospital on April 8, at the age of 92.
Peter was born in Budapest, Hungary and emigrated to the US in his early teens. He graduated from Riverdale Country School, and MIT with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. A registered Professional Engineer, he spent his 36-year career at Pfizer, Inc. specializing in Manufacturing and Pharmaceuticals. Following his retirement, he became a long-standing volunteer at White Plains Hospital, and member of the Old Guard of White Plains.
Peter was an avid skier, skater, swimmer, boater, photographer, Bridge player, pilot and dog-walker (having had several dogs over the years). Local community activities included Scouting leadership, charter organization of the Scarsdale Pool, and 50+ years as a member of the Scarsdale Congregational Church.
His hallmarks were a ready-smile, polite demeanor, and impish sense of humor. In his own words, “July 20th is a momentous day in history. On July 20, 1969 the first man walked on the moon. On July 20th, 1943 several German generals tried to kill Hitler with a bomb, unfortunately the bomb was not close or powerful enough and Hitler escaped. And on July 20th, 1924 -- I was born in Budapest, Hungary.”
“Let me give you two definitions of a Hungarian. First: A Hungarian is someone who walks into a revolving door behind you, but comes out ahead of you. Second: Both a Hungarian and a Romanian will sell you their grandmother --but the Hungarian will deliver” on his commitment.
Mr. Agoston is survived by Eva Agoston, his wife of 65 years, as well as sons Steve (of Bethel, NY), Tom (and Yukari Nishimura of Stamford, CT), and daughters Susie Goldstein (and Hal of Minneapolis, MN) and Margie (of Jupiter, FL), three grand-daughters Jess, Kimi and Tori, and two grandsons Reed and Kyle.
An informal gathering for family and friends to celebrate Peter’s life is planned in Dyckman Hall at the Scarsdale Congregational Church, 1 Heathcote Rd, Scarsdale NY on Sunday, May 21 from 3-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to White Plains Hospital Foundation at 41 East Post Road, White Plains, NY 10601 or online at www.givetowphospital.org or https://www.givetowphospital.org/ways-of-giving/in-honor-in-memory-gifts Gifts specified “in Memory of Peter Agoston” will benefit the Eva and Peter Agoston Fund for Volunteer Services.
