Nessa Sternfeld

Nessa Sternfeld, a longtime resident of Tarrytown New York, passed away on May 18, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Eliahu S. and Esther Hurwitz, sister of the late Zalkind "Ziggy" Hurwitz. She graduated from Walton High School and City College of New York. A skillful writer and editor during her working career, Nessa was also an active, community-minded volunteer. Nessa was president of the PTA, president of the League of Women Voters of the Tarrytowns and was active for many years for the UJA. For 20 years, she was an English tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of the Tarrytowns. More recently, she was a "Conversation Partner" at Westchester Community College, helping foreign-born students improve their English. Nessa is survived by her beloved husband, Julius "Pete", her two cherished daughters, Esther (Michael) Shatzer of Waterloo, Iowa and Judith Bernstein of Larchmont, NY and her treasured grandsons, Benjamin and Adam Bernstein. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and community. Interment will be private.
