Nancy J Darboven

May 17, 1943 — February 26, 2011

Born on May 17, 1943 Departed on February 26, 2011

Nancy Darboven, lifted Wings, dies at age 67. Aunt Nancy is the last of a generation, preceded in death by her brother, Ernest F. Darboven Jr., parents Ernest and Edith Darboven and Aunt Ella Deegan of White Plains, New York. Nancy Darboven was the inspiration for playwright Arthur Kopit's 1979 Tony Award for Best Play, Wings. In the play, a woman who has suffered a stroke must journey through various stages of amazement, anger and determination to get to the far side and eventual resolution of her infirmity. In life, her nieces and nephew only hold fond memories of a fun loving adult always up for a bike ride, a swim, a game of croquet. Nancy was a dedicated member of the Presbyterian Church of White Plains. She lived a private life, a gentle life. Each of her nieces and nephew can only hope to emulate her example in their own unique ways. Aunt Nancy cherished time spent at Lake Waccabuc at the house her father built. In recent years, she particularly enjoyed shared hours with her great niece Gayle Miranda of Manhattan. The two spent long summer days swimming, horseback riding and simply chit-chatting. Reportedly, it was difficult to get a word in edge-wise when these two were together. Nancy is survived by an incredible network of friends, Piper (Glenn and Bailey) Greenwood of Seattle, Erin Darboven of Salt Lake City, Magen (Raul and Gayle) Miranda of Manhattan, Dineen (Rob) Vallance of Portland, Roland (Allyson) Gilmore of Salt Lake City and Max (Canine) of White Plains. The family wishes to offer special thanks to Meals on Wheels for their dedicated service spanning many years, we ask that memorial donations be directed to them. May we all continue on, lifted in spirit by the Wings of Nancy Darboven.
