A proud son of Ireland and an even prouder American, Michael J Merritt passed away peacefully on March 26th surrounded by family as we recounted wonderful stories and great memories. Mike was born on October 9, 1931 in Ballyclough, Mallow, Co. Cork Ireland to Jack and Mary (McCarthy). He emigrated to the United States in June of 1954. He served in Korea as a member of the U.S. Army and in 2024 he participated in the New York City Veterans Day memorial service and parade – the capstone to his service. Mike was a master cabinet maker and general contractor, building and owning his own business for many years and prior to his retirement he served as the Director of Building Operations for the Mellon Foundation. He was an avid outdoorsman and member of the Daniel Gray Fishing Club and the Hartsdale Fire Department.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife Mary who joined him from Ireland over 65 years ago. He was predeceased by his sisters Gertrude and Elizabeth and is survived by his brothers John and William and his sister Maura. Father to Marie (William Poulos), Neil (Debra), Eileen Weston (Julian) and Anne. He was an amazing Grandad to Will (Nicole), Alex and Michael Poulos, Jack and Jenna Merritt and Jules, Sadie and Bailey Weston.
Mike loved having his family and friends gather at his farm, Emerald Isle Ranch in upstate NY, to “put in a good day’s work with a bit of fun thrown in for good measure”.
