Mary Mezzasalma, 98, of Flushing, NY and a former longtime resident of Brooklyn, NY and Messina, Italy died peacefully in her sleep on Monday, December 12, 2016 at The Grove Nursing Facility in Valhalla, NY.
Mary was born on August 10, 1918 in New York City. She was the daughter of the late Gaetano Mezzasalma and Anna Zappia-Mezzasalma. Her late husband Nunzio Mastroeni was also from Messina, Italy.
Mary attended Catholic schools in both Brooklyn, NY and Messina, Italy.
For many years she worked as a seamstress in the garment district in NYC. Her real labor of love was her piano, singing and cooking for her family.
Mary was a long standing parishioner of The Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Forest Hills, NY.
She is survived by her daughter Kathy Audubon of Bellrose, Queens and her son Thomas Mastroeni of Greenburgh, NY. Four grandchildren, Maryann Goldberg, and Charles Dawson of Port Jefferson, NY, Billy Audubon of Bellrose, Queens, and Eliza LeBron of Shirley, Long Island ,and a Daughter in Law Felicia Labbruzzo- Mastroeni . Mary also has 7 great-grandchildren. Melanie, Joshua, Erica, Sarah, Elliot, Ryan and Emma Mary and one Sister in law Rosetta Mezzasalma of Flushing Queens. There are many nieces and nephews who were also very dear to her.
The family members who preceded her were her brother Luigi Mezzasalma, Flushing, NY, her sister Clelia Carrara of Messina, Italy and sister Wanda Floss of Denver, Colorado
A Memorial service will take place at The Ballard Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue, White Plains, NY on Thursday, December 15, 2016 from 11:00 am to 1:00pm.
A very special thank you to all the family and relatives especially her daughter Kathy and her sister-in-law Rosetta Mezzasalma for all of their assistance in helping Mary in so many ways. Also a special thanks must be given to the splendid nursing staff at The Grove for their genuine attentiveness and kindness in making Mary a part of her new surroundings.
