It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ellen Hradek, who left us for a better place on November 5. Ellen is survived by her beloved daughter Jennifer Lauren Hradek (Steve), loving sister Beth Zicca, Anthony and Pam Briante (uncle and aunt), Rosita Briante (aunt), cousins too numerous to count, and her grand-dog Ginger. Family also came in the form of her longtime friends - Pam Marazio, Diane and John Marconi, and Sandy and Rich Orsino. She is predeceased by her mother Elizabeth Briante, Dolores Briante (aunt), Rocco Briante (uncle) and Lecia and Tony Briante (grandparents).
Ellen graduated White Plains High School in 1972 followed by a 38-year career at Malcolm Pirnie in White Plains as an Executive Administrative Assistant to the President. She took a brief hiatus from that role in the 80's to open and run The Periwinkle Express, a high-end children's boutique in Armonk. This store complimented her love of shopping - a weekend never went by that she couldn't be found in Bloomingdales or Nordstroms, or shopping on QVC. She loved to spoil her daughter with gifts, who often had to tell her upon returning home from the mall "Are you crazy? Return it all!"
She will always be remembered for her connection with animals - her love of her many dogs and cats, and wildlife too, including turkeys, squirrels and many deer at home that became her woodland pets. Her favorite was a deer she named "Friend" who she hand-fed and would pet every day.
Ellen was a talented baker, especially around the holidays, making tons of different Christmas cookies enjoyed by all. She had an artistic side and loved decorating the house. Learning how to sew from her grandmother, Ellen made all of Lauren's Halloween costumes by hand. She loved watching classic movies and Hallmark Christmas movies, even in the middle of July. Ellen was an avid reader and loved music, her favorite being the Beatles. In her younger years, her and Beth religiously attended Alive n' Kickin's concerts, following them around, even out to The Hamptons, which drove their mother crazy.
Never a year went by without her cherished trips to Montauk, and we are sure she is sitting on a beach right now in the Heavens, resting at peace.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the SPCA of Westchester, TevaLand Sanctuary Farm, or any other animal or wildlife rescue.
