Dr. Mary Elizabeth Correa, born October 29, 1946 in New York City, died Friday, May 9, 2014 of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was the daughter of the late Mathias F. Correa and the late Louise Kennedy Correa. She is survived by her loving sisters Anne Correa and Louise Newland, brother-in-law Eric Newland, nieces Abigail Aglubat and Chloe Newland.
Mary graduated from Convent of the Sacred Heart and went on to Boston College where she graduated Cum Laude from the School of Nursing. She also received a Masters degree in Clinical Psychiatry from Yale University. She then worked as head nurse at Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital. Mary also was a professor at the University of Cincinnati and consulted for global corporations, as well as leading a project for the State of Illinois. She then completed her PhD in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at Purdue University.
After completing her PhD, she became a professor of business at Skidmore College where, among her other accomplishments, she was instrumental in launching the International Affairs Program. However, Mary’s prime focus, first and foremost, was her undergraduate students, to whom she devoted enormous amounts of time and attention. She was fully committed to their success and took great pride in their accomplishments.
Mary was a Board Member and later a Fellow of the AK Rice Institute. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society and served as a consultant with Edge Associates of Pittsburgh, focusing on productivity enhancement, organizational design, conflict resolution and career development.
She joined the Board of Directors of Saratoga Bridges in 1998 and became president in 2002. Mary became highly involved with the NYSARC where she served on the Board of Governors, chairing their Ethics Committee.
Mary was an avid athlete and loved ice dancing, tennis, skiing and hiking.
On Friday, May 16th, a Mass will be said at St. Joseph’s Church, 95 Plum Brook Road, Somers, NY at 11:30am followed by a reception at the home of Eric and Louise Newland in Katonah.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mary to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
As kind as she was brilliant, Mary will be missed by all.
