Marie Salomon

September 10, 1947 — April 20, 2024

White Plains, NY

Marie Lucie Yanick Donis was born on September 10, 1947, in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti to hardworking business owners, Mr. and Mrs. Magloire Donis.  She spent her early years in Haiti studying and eventually worked as a translator.  Her love of languages led her to have proficiency in French, Haitian Creole, and English.  In her 20’s, she decided to move to the United States to pursue the American Dream and have better opportunities for herself. When she arrived in the US, she settled in Brooklyn with the help of friends and family. It is here that she married her first husband and gave birth to her son, Eddy.  As a woman beyond her years, Marie soon left that marriage as she knew it was not the environment she wanted to raise her son.  After a couple of years, Marie met the love of her life who not only treated her like royalty but quickly took on the role of loving father to her son.  Marie and Marcel Salomon married on April 23, 1979 and soon moved to the Bronx to pursue job opportunities at Montefiore Hospital.  Marie served as a unit secretary for many years, taking pride in the work she did.

Throughout her lifetime she was a strong believer in education and pushed her children to receive higher education degrees so they could have a better life than she had. Shortly after her husband Marcel passed in 2016, Marie could no longer live in their Bronx home alone and moved in with her son to be taken care of by her children.  She spent her last years safe, loved, enjoying nature, and surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Marie is predeceased by her parents, husband, and siblings Chantale and Lyonel Donis.  She is survived by her son Eddy, daughter-in-law Miselys, her daughter Vickie, son-in-law Jeff, and her four grandchildren, Brianna, Ava, Eddy Jr, and Amelle, as well as, the community of extended family and friends she built through the years.

Marie will be remembered for her strength and determination. She had a love for baking, traveling, dancing, and singing. She will be remembered for her joyful laughter, her unwavering faith in God and commitment to the Catholic Church, her advocacy skills, but mostly as a mother and grandmother who will be forever missed.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ballard Durand for their attentive service, the caring and compassionate women who helped care for her in her last years, Monica, Natalie and Cathy, and all the family and friends who have offered love, support, encouragement, and connection during this difficult time.
