Marie Donna Marcantonio Hunce

Marie (Marcantonio) Hunce was born in Manhattan on February 13, 1926 to Rose (Sacco) and Saverio Marcantonio, the oldest girl of five, with two sisters and two brothers. Marie was raised in the Bronx where her mother, Rose taught her children to be self-sufficient, honest, and hardworking. As a child, Marie was known for her quick wit, mischievousness, and desire to keep up with the boys. At the age of ten, her attempt to show-off failed as she was caught trying to steal from the local ice cream truck. She and her sister Anna would join their neighbors in mourning by attending home gatherings in hopes of getting a cookie. Marie and her four siblings were a tight bunch and learned from a young age to work hard. They remained close all their lives.
After attending Walton High School in the Bronx, Marie graduated from the National Institute of Dieticians and went on to have a successful career, eventually retiring as the head of Mount Vernon Hospital's dietary department. She was known to be a tough boss, but everyone loved and respected her.
She met her husband, Joseph (Joe) Hunce while he worked for the US Postal Service. Marie and Joe had three boys, Joseph, (Joey), Peter and Raymond, and Marie was immensely proud of each of them. Marie was very close to her grandchildren and extremely proud of them as well. She made no secret of her fondness and attachment to the females in her life and had a special bond with her daughters-in-law, nieces, and grandnieces, who adored her.
Marie enjoyed traveling the world and some of her favorite trips included cruises to South America and Alaska and a visit to France where she, her sister Anna and sister-in-law Terry visited the beach at Normandy where her brother Joe was part of the Allied invasion during World War II. She also enjoyed going to Florida annually for several years with her sister Anna, and made several trips to the casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
A shopper at heart, Marie always came back from her travels with "a little something" and was an incredibly generous gift-giver.
Marie was an avid Yankee fan, and in addition to travel, loved to do word puzzles and cook.
Marie is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Hunce, her sons, Joseph and Peter Hunce, her brothers, Saverio Marcantonio and Joseph Marcantonio. She is survived by her son, Raymond, her grandsons, Raymond Hunce Jr. and Peter Hunce Jr., her sisters, Anna Goss and Gloria Lagnese, her sister-in-law Terry Marcantonio, her daughter in-law Rosanne Hunce and many nieces and nephews.
