Manuel J. Riberio

Manuel “Ribs” Joseph Riberio, 90, of Howell, NJ, and former longtime resident of Elmsford, N.Y. and former Village of Elmsford Trustee, Deputy Mayor, and Recreation Commissioner died on May 13, 2021.

Ribs was born on November 20, 1930 in New York City to Alice Fasce and Joaquim Ribeiro. The family moved to Hastings on Hudson when Ribs was 11 years of age.

Ribs served aboard the USS Anderson with the United States Navy in the Special Service Division from 1950 until honorably discharged in 1955. He fought in the Korean War and in the Battle of Inchon. He also played Navy baseball in Hawaii, Guam, Japan, China, the Philippine Islands, and the US west coast. He was selected to join the All-Star Pacific team Island Champs. He also started the first softball league at the USO Illinois Great Lakes Center.

Following his service, Ribs attended the University of Wisconsin- Stout Institute with a football and baseball scholarship. He received a minor league baseball tryout with the Washington Senators in 1955 as an infielder. He became a semi-pro baseball player for several years.

Ribs eventually moved back to New York and began his career in data processing for the Town of Greenburgh. He served in this position for 30 years and was promoted to supervisor. In 1960, he married Ann Ruth Thomson and had two children; Carol and Edward. Ribs played softball from 1960 to 1986 with the CSEA organization and was a member of six All-Star teams. Ribs coached basketball for Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Elmsford Little League.

Ribs served as an Elmsford Trustee, Deputy Mayor, and Recreation Commissioner for over 10 years. He created two new playing fields, updated both Legion and DeLuca parks, and organized recreational activities for the youth, young adults, and senior citizens of the village. He also served on the Elmsford Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of Assessors.

In 2003, Ribs was inducted into the Hastings-on Hudson Hall of Fame for football, baseball, basketball, and boxing. He is a lifelong member of Elmsford’s Italian American Club and was a parishioner at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

After the passing of his wife, Ribs relocated to Monmouth County, NJ, and spent his final years residing with his daughter, granddaughters, and beloved pets.

Surviving is his daughter Carol Doherty and three granddaughters Brenna, Caroline, and Grace, of Howell, NJ;  His son Edward Riberio, wife Dana, and two grandchildren Ava and Reid of New York City; Sister Marie Savino of Dobbs Ferry, NY; Sister Betty Pryschlak,  husband Steve of Little River, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased is his wife Ann Ruth Thomson, 2005; brothers Father George Ribeiro and Louis Ribeiro.
