Lucine Adourian, our adored mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at 93 years old on Sunday, December 10, 2023. She is predeceased by her parents Serpuhie and Toros Torosian, and her beloved husband of over 60 years, Zaven Adourian. She is survived by her three children, Hratch Adourian, Betty Salbashian, and Silva Demirdjian, and her six grandchildren.
Lucine was born in Aleppo, Syria in 1930 where her family fled to safety during the Armenian Genocide of 1915. She married her sweetheart Zaven Adourian in 1953 and raised their family within the Armenian community of Aleppo. In the 1960s, searching for a better life, Lucine and Zaven moved their family to Caracas, Venezuela, where they lived and worked for years until finally settling in New York City in the 1960s. They built a tailoring and dry cleaning business where Lucine tirelessly worked for over 35 years. She became a well-known and respected part of the local neighborhood, even doing all of the dry cleaning and tailoring for the uniforms of the local police precinct.
Lucine was full of life and laughter. She truly loved people and was a gifted storyteller with the sharpest memory for the smallest detail. She always had the perfect old-world saying or parable of wisdom for the right moment, be it in Armenian, Arabic, or Turkish, which always educated as much as entertained her audience.
Lucine was a devout Christian whose faith sustained her throughout her life. She was tirelessly devoted to her church and her church community. She loved music and loved to sing and was a talented soprano with an encyclopedic memory for hymns and canticles. Every Sunday, she'd be with her friends and other members of the St. Gregory congregation, in which she and Zaven had been active members and donors since its founding in the 1970s.
Her pride and joy was her family - her children and grandchildren, to whom she was
unconditionally devoted. She was a model of unwavering love and selflessness which continues to serve as a guiding light to embrace the values of compassion, enduring warmth, and love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Gregory's Armenian Church Sunday School.
