Hawthorne

Louetta ("Lou") Scully, a long time resident of Ossining, NY passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at the Bethel Nursing Home in Ossining. She was 89 years old. Louetta was born on December 5, 1921 and raised in Lynbrook, Long Island. She was the daughter of Erik and Louetta (Burke) Neuberg. She graduated from East Rockaway High School and attended the Maryland College for Women in Lutherville, Maryland where she studied to be a dietician. She was employed by the New York Central Railroad and then left to become a floral designer and arranger for Goldfarb Florist in Manhattan. It was there that she met her husband, Paul Scully. They married on April 12, 1947 and moved to Ossining. Mr. Scully predeceased her on October 2, 1981. Over the years, Louetta or "Lou-Lou" as she was often called served her community in many capacities. She volunteered and was past president of The Friends of The Dominican Sisters at Mariandale. She was also employed by the Ossining School District as a secretary at Park School. Louetta also worked tirelessly as a volunteer in local causes, among them, The Interfaith Council for Action, Project Concern and The Ossining Drug Addiction Center, which sought to aid and bring local drug addicts into recovery. In the 1970's Louetta opened the Ossining Yarn Shop, a needlework and crafts store. She successfully ran the shop until deciding to retire in 1984. She then continued her volunteerism by becoming a member of The Phelps Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She eventually became president of the auxiliary and served on the hospital's Board of Directors. Louetta was very active in her parish of St. Ann's in Ossining, where she was a member and later president of The St. Ann's Sodality. She enjoyed serving her Church, the hospital and her community until her illnesses prevented her from continuing. In spite of these illnesses, she never lost her indomitable spirit and perseverance. Louetta is lovingly remembered and survived by three children: Erik Scully and wife Rebecca, Constance Montague and husband John and Patrice Scully-Murray and her husband Thomas as well as grandchildren, Jillian Montague and Sul-Jee Scully and three step-grandchildren, Shannon, Amanda and Kelley Murray. Louetta is also survived by her sister-in-law, Jacqueline Sullivan. "Lou-Lou" will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the wonderful staff at The Bethel Nursing home, who gave her amazing care and helped to make her final years peaceful and comfortable. She loved many and was loved by many! Calling hours at the Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 Stevens Ave., Hawthorne, NY on Sunday from 3:00 to 7:00pm.
