Lois Stogel passed away peacefully at The New Jewish Home - Sarah Neuman in Mamaroneck, April 7, 2023 at age 92. She was the matriarch of the mixed Glauber-Stogel family of White Plains, a mother of five sons, three stepdaughters and a stepson, a grandmother of 19 and great-grandmother of eight. Her family came first, last and always, whether serving up big meals at the dinner table each night, helping with homework or teaching her kids how to play catch, ride bikes and swim laps. She adored baseball, especially the Mets, and thought Willie Mays was the greatest player she ever saw.
Lois Ellen Miller was born and raised in New Rochelle and graduated from Isaac Young High School. Her father Emanuel Miller was a pharmacist and her mother Anne was a homemaker. Her younger sister June Nesbitt became a music teacher. She married her first husband, Marvin Glauber, a World War II veteran from White Plains, in 1951. They later divorced. In 1967, she married Sanford S. "Sandy" Stogel, and they were inseparable until his death in 2004.
Before her first marriage, Lois was briefly in the workforce as a secretary at the Empire State Building. After raising her children, she became a longtime secretary at The Congregation Kol Ami of Westchester in White Plains. She also taught cooking classes at the synagogue's Sunday school. She retired at the age of 80.
Lois had a keen sense of social justice, embracing racial equality, women's liberation and environmental causes. She was also one of the first recyclers (there were never any paper napkins in the house).
Survivors include her sister June, children Tom (Bonnie) Glauber, Rich (Yolanda) Glauber, Bob (Jutta) Glauber, Bill (Priya) Glauber and Mick Glauber, Charles (Chris) Stogel, Jayne (Joseph) Hynes, and Lori (Scott) Dreffin, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and her stepdaughter, Leah Stogel.
Lois was our champion. And she will remain with us in our memories forever.
