Lester B Mayers,

March 9, 1937 — March 10, 2015

Born on March 9, 1937 Departed on March 10, 2015

Mayers, Lester B., M.D., 78, died after a short illness, on Tuesday, March 10. Beloved husband of 55 years to Nancy (Schwartz), father of Michael, and his wife Leyla Nakisbendi, and Matthew, and his wife Beth. Adored Poppa to Aliya, Samantha, Aydin, Meredith and Maia. Devoted son of the late Hank and Edith (Colvin) Mayers, and loving brother of the late Ruth M. Gottlieb. Lester attended the Bronx High School of Science, leaving with a Ford Foundation Scholarship for the University of Wisconsin, at age 15. He received his M.D. from Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons, interned at Columbia/Bellevue Hospital, conducted research at University of PA Dept of Physiology under the auspices of the NIH, and completed his residency in medicine at Philadelphia General Hospital. He served in the US Army Medical Corps as Captain and staff medical officer. Dr. Mayers was in private practice in internal medicine and pulmonology for 32 years in White Plains. He was a senior attending physician at White Plains Hospital and held the title of Chief of the Pulmonary Disease Service and of the Respiratory Therapy Department and the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. He was also Medical Director of the Burke Cardiac Rehabilitation program at the White Plains YMCA . After retiring from private practice he became Director of Sports Medicine at the Pace University Athletics Department and Adjunct Lecturer at Lienhard School of Nursing. Dr. Mayers was a volunteer physician at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid and the Venue medical officer and athlete medical physician (Luge, Bobsled, Skeleton) at the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City, UT. During his career, Dr. Mayers was a journal reviewer for many professional publications. His curiosity led him to research and publish on widely varied subjects such as pulmonology, prevalence of and complications from body art and piercing, dance and dance injuries, and, perhaps most timely, concussions, managing concussions and return-to-play evaluations. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to charities near and dear to Dr. Mayers, including USA Luge, 57 Church Street, Lake Placid, NY 12946 or Shipman Youth Center, P.O.
