Leo J. Horan, Jr.

July 28, 1926 — August 27, 2023

Thornwood, NY

Leo (Larry) Joseph Horan, a native New Yorker, born on July 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, peacefully passed away at the  age of 97 on August 27th, 2023 at his home in Thornwood, N.Y., surrounded by his beloved children. He was the cherished son of Leo Joseph Horan Sr. and Cecile Kertz.

A decorated WWII Navy veteran, Larry served his country with honor and distinction. He was a devoted husband to Joan Roberta Kickbusch for an incredible 67 years and a loving father to his six children, Virginia Horan Papaioannou (Panagiotis), Larry Horan III (2012), Robert Horan, Nina Horan Barr (2020) (Richard), Michael Horan, and Lisa Horan Mastromonaco (Martin). His legacy extended to being a loving and legendary grandfather to thirteen grandchildren, Sarah Barr, Shannon Barr (Matt), Samantha Barr, Sabrina Barr, Joan Papaioannou (1997), Ioannis Joseph Papaioannou, Michael Horan, Kelsy Horan, Jennifer Horan, Lea Horan, Michelle Horan, Hunter Mastromonaco, and Jake Mastromonaco. He also held the cherished title of Great Grandfather to Jack and Charlotte Horan.

Larry's life journey took him from the bustling streets of Brooklyn to the vibrant heart of New York City, and later to the serene community of Thornwood in 1967. In his earlier years, Larry was an integral part of the family shoe business, J & J Slater. He later built a successful career at Equitable Life Insurance Company while pursuing his passion for helping people.

Larry's charismatic and friendly personality endeared him to all who crossed his path. He was a pillar of his community, actively involved in various organizations that enriched the lives of others. A dedicated parishioner of Holy Rosary Church, Larry lent his voice to the choir, extended a warm welcome as an usher, and eagerly participated in events like the annual Church bazaar and pancake breakfasts. He was a proud member of the Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion, demonstrating his commitment to service. Larry's giving spirit shone brightest during the holiday season, as he spread joy and hope to his community while volunteering with the Salvation Army.

A devoted family man, Larry's presence was felt not only within his home but also in the local Little League and Boy Scouts communities. He enjoyed leisurely days at the White Plains Bowling Alley, cultivating friendships through shared passions. Summers were reserved for the family cottage in upstate N.Y., where Larry found joy in sightseeing and creating cherished memories with friends and family.

In honor of Larry's memory, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Gilda’s Club of Westchester or The Humane Society, causes close to his heart.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather in remembrance at Hawthorne Funeral Home on Thursday, September 7th, 2023, from 5-8 PM. A service celebrating Larry's life will commence at 7 PM. The final resting place will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Wausau, WI.

Larry's legacy of love, service, and camaraderie will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, dear Larry, as you join the stars in the heavens above.
