Born on September 20, 1933 Departed on August 14, 2013

Laura Ganjumyan (nee Martirosova) of Port Chester, New York passed away on Wednesday, August 14 at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on September 20, 1933 in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia (then one of the 15 republics of the USSR) to Sergey Martirosov and Tatyana Fruman. After her father passed away when she was just nine years old, Laura and her sister, Irena, were raised by their strong-willed, yet always joyful mother during the difficult years of World War II. She was married in February 1962 to Rafael Ganjumyan. Following their wedding, the young couple moved to Yerevan, Armenia in order to raise their children in their homeland.
Prior to her marriage, Laura earned a degree in civil engineering from the Tbilisi Institute of Railroad Transportation with a specialty in water supply. She became a highly respected engineer in Georgia and Armenia, specializing in the design of hydropower stations, water treatment plants, and sewage systems.
Laura immigrated to the United States in 1997 to join her daughter and her daughter’s new family. Her husband joined her in 1998 after retiring from a long career as a civil engineer. Laura was a loving and devoted grandmother who was instrumental in caring for and raising three of their grandchildren in Rye Brook, New York.
Laura is survived and incredibly missed by her husband of 51 years, Rafael, her son Serge (Vilnius, Lithuania), her daughter and son-in-law Nooné and Vahan Janjigian (Rye Brook, New York), and her grandchildren Emin (25), Ani (12), and Aaron (8) Ganjumyan; and Lori (19), Luciné (17), and Lily (10) Janjigian.
A viewing and funeral service will be held beginning at 9:30 am on Saturday, August 17 at St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church, 1131 North Street, White Plains, New York. Burial will follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye, New York. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church are appreciated.
