Julia (Sheila) O’Mahony

January 4, 1931 – May 6, 2022

Julia (Sheila) O’Mahony (nee Brosnan) 91, of White Plains, N.Y. passed away peacefully on May 6, 2022 in her home in the company of her loving family. Julia began her journey on a family farm in Castle Island, County Kerry, Ireland, going to school in a one-room schoolhouse, and courageously braved a three-week ocean voyage on her own at the tender age of 18 in 1949. From country farm to the biggest city in the world, Julia found herself in New York, where she proudly worked as a waitress for Stouffers in Manhattan, and met Larry, whom she married in 1954.  Julia devoted her life to her family, giving her all for her husband and three children, moving from Queens to her sole home of residence in White Plains, NY in 1959.

Julia often reminisced about the Statue of Liberty as her first and most cherished site as she sailed to the US. She loved the simple things in life, most importantly aside from her family was her “two-bagger” cup of tea, brewed scientifically to perfection each morning to start her day. Her “million dollar smile” and unmistakable Irish brogue made everyone’s day and will be sorely missed but remains impressed in the memories of those who loved her. Julia was very wise and was often looked up to for her many words of wisdom and counsel. Even after the passing of her husband, Julia remained self-sufficient and simply enjoyed her day-to-day life, like keeping up with current events and reading her many newspapers. Another simple pleasure was tending to the family cat, Afra.

Julia is survived by her son Larry Jr., daughters and spouses Margaret and Floyd Pettit and Arlene and Alan Cavallerano; brother and spouse Tom and Peggy Brosnan; and is predeceased by her loving husband Larry {who called her on the same date as his passing, May 6, 2004}; and three brothers Tim, Con, and John.

In her later years, Julia was cared for by many, and had a dear and devoted family friend in Dain Edwards. Julia and the family wish to thank her caregivers, including Diane and Celestina from Westchester Family Care.

Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Monday, May 9, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM. Funeral Mass, Holy Name of Jesus, Valhalla, NY on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, NY.
