Josephine (Apostolico) Scaringi

Josephine Apostolico Scaringi, 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2020 at the Family of Caring Nursing Home in Ridgewood, NJ. She was born in the Bronx to Italian immigrants Guiseppe Apostolico, a stone cutter, and Maria, a seamstress. She was truly the original Renaissance woman. She enrolled in trade school, and along with her two sisters, Fanny and Sophie, they carried on the family seamstress tradition. Married to Pasquale in 1946, they raised four children in a typical American fashion while maintaining traditional Italian culture. Together they opened a small, successful card and candy shop in the Bronx. Later she became a bus matron, allowing her to be around children, whom she loved dearly. Also a clever inventor, she has a patent for a bow-making machine. Josephine lived a very active lifestyle. She competed in the Senior Games alongside her husband, winning numerous awards for Track and Field. She also was a very active volunteer for the senior center in White Plains, NY. Fortunately, she was able to watch her children grow and was blessed with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Independent, smart, sassy, creative, beautiful and tough are just some of the words to describe the extent of the talents and wonderful personality of this special lady. She is predeceased by her loving husband Pasquale (1923-1998), son Victor (1957-2011) granddaughter Gemma (1992-2017) and siblings Thomas, Fanny and Sophie. She leaves behind three children, son Patrick, son Gerard (Denise), daughter Regina Zeppieri (Anthony), grandsons Michael Zeppieri (Barbara) and Matthew Zeppieri (Lisa Ann), granddaughters Mackenzie and Camryn, and great-grandchildren James, William, Sophia, and Christina. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or open funeral mass. There will be a Mass and memorial service gathering at a future date to be announced. The family wishes all to be safe. Entombment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Holy Name of Jesus Church, Valhalla, New York.
