Joseph Schweizer of New City, NY, passed away peacefully on April 10th at the age of 85 while at the Joseph Raso Hospice Center.
“JJ” was born in Nyack, NY on December 25, 1937 to Joseph and Ellen Schweizer. Joseph was raised in Bardonia, NY, until he and his family moved to Pearl River, NY, where he attended Pearl River High School. The summer after graduation JJ would meet his future wife, Hope Miller of Norwood, NJ. Hope and Joseph were married on October 22, 1960, and resided in New City, NY, ever since.
After graduating from high school, Joseph attended Alfred State University, where he earned a degree in horticultural sciences. Joseph began his professional career as the sole proprietor of J.J. Schweizer Co., Inc. where he specialized in commercial landscaping and athletic field construction. J.J. also built many homes throughout Rockland County over the years.
Joseph was a proud veteran who served as a cook for the United States Army. He was also a longtime member of the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps, where he served as president and was also instrumental in the construction of the current NCVAC building. Joseph enjoyed traveling with Hope, having been everywhere from Hawaii to much of Europe. J.J. especially enjoyed summers at their home at the Jersey shore and boating on the Toms River. He was never happier than when he was spending time with his family and countless friends. His biggest joy, however, was his three granddaughters, all of whom he was eternally proud of.
Joseph is survived by his brother, Gerhardt; his son Christopher of Queens, NY; his son Blair and his wife Susan of Bardonia, NY and his three granddaughters, Taylor, Carly and Eve. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ellen Schweizer, his wife, Hope Schweizer and his eldest son, Todd Schweizer.
