A lifelong Bronx resident, John K. Reid passed away peacefully on October 3, 2023. Jack was born on January 25, 1928, one of 6 children born to Michael and Catherine (nee Leonard) Reid. He attended The School of St. Angela and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, proudly working a paper route to help cover the cost of tuition. After graduation, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1947, receiving the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal - Japan. Under the GI bill, Jack attended two years of college at Fordham University. He was appointed to the Fire Department of New York in 1953 and served at various locations with promotions to Lieutenant in 1960 and Captain in 1967. He retired from the FDNY in 1977, ending his career at Engine 97 in the Bronx.
On June 6, 1954, Jack married Suzanne Marinaccio at St. Angela Merici Church in the Bronx. Sue pre-deceased him in 2020. He is survived by his four children, Andrea (Ben) Olivera, Kenneth (Blanca), James (Patricia) and Suzanne Reid. He was pre-deceased by a son, Michael, in 1960. Jack is also survived by his grandchildren, Melanie, Michael, Caroline and Jack, and his 3 great grandchildren, Lilith, Bennie Marie, and Luthien, along with extended family Chris and Kim Rueger and their children Joe, Allie, and Lily, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was a devout Roman Catholic and, along with his wife, a long time parishioner at Holy Rosary Church in the Bronx, volunteering at Mass to assist with the collection basket.
In addition to being an avid New York Yankee fan, Jack enjoyed renovating and updating the family home, watching the History and Discovery channels, researching his ancestry roots and donating to various charities throughout the U.S. He was especially proud of his 1969 Ford Fairlane station wagon, which he maintained in mint condition.
