Joan Healey Decars passed away at her home in Croton on Hudson on July 11, 2021, after a long illness. She was 88 years old and lived life to the fullest.
Joan was born on February 11, 1933, in Aydlett, NC to Ruby and Ralph Healey. She was raised in Maryland and came to NY on her own as a fiercely independent young woman. She worked for Avon Cosmetics and worked her way up to district sales manager. She also worked as a secretary for Burke Rehabilitation and New Rochelle Hospital. She lived most of her life in Mamaroneck where she was well-known throughout the town as the “early morning walking lady”. In the 60s she was known as the “Christmas cookie mom”. It started when she made cookies each Christmas for her daughter; it then grew to where the kids on the block would line up for a bag of her cookies each week during the Christmas season.
In 2009, she moved to Croton on Hudson to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law.
Her passion was dancing. She was known to ballroom dance seven days a week and designed her own ballroom dresses. Later in life she loved to read and play games on her iPad. She was also a master at jigsaw puzzles.
She was a devoted mother and friend. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Donna and Frank Bonofiglio.
Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-5 PM, where Funeral Services will be held on Thursday 10 AM. Interment, Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY to follow.
