Jerome Herman Mandel passed away peacefully on January 10, 2009 in Jacksonville, FL. Jerry was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 17, 1922 to his parents Morris and Bertha Mandel.
He is predeceased by his parents; his first wife of 47 years, Beverly; and his grandson Derek. In 2002 he remarried and is survived by his wife Irene; his sister Gladys M. Klein; sons Bruce and Steven; grandchildren Kristen, Mark, Kaysie, and Benjamin; daughter-in-law Kate; his cousin Herb; nephews Irwin, Fred and Dan; step-children Carol, Dale, and Keith; step-grandchildren Jamie, Anne Marie, Ashley, Ryan, Kevin, and Garrett
Jerry attended Brooklyn Technical High School, and interrupted his college education at CCNY by enlisting to serve his country in the Second World War as a paratrooper. He served as First Lieutenant with the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regimental Combat Team and the 11th Airborne of the U.S. Army. In addition to receiving the Combat Infantryman's Badge twice, Jerry was also awarded the Bronze Star, Master Jump Wings, and numerous other campaign and meritorious service awards.
After serving his country, Jerry completed his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, followed by his Juris Doctor from St. John's Law School. He was a member of the New York State Bar Association and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.
He worked for Turner Construction Company for 23 years. Jerry started as a time keeper for the Ballentine Brewery Project in Newark, NJ. He worked on the Port Authority Terminal in NYC. He ran the estimating department of the Chicago office. Jerry participated in the development of the Model Cities Program. He ran the contract department for Turner at its headquarters in NYC and was the Project Executive for the Lincoln Hospital.
In 1970, at the behest of several Wall Street investment banking firms, Jerry founded The Mandel Organization, Inc. He was responsible for coordinating the finance, design, and construction of billions of dollars worth of projects throughout the United States and abroad, to include hospitals, congregate care facilities, the establishment of the Intrepid Air Sea and Space Museum, college and university buildings.
Jerry helped found and was the first Chairman of the Board of the Beth Hillel Congregation in Willmette, IL. He was President of the Central Queens Democratic Organization. Jerry was a Board Member of the Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless. He was a member of the Urban Land Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and numerous other professional organizations.
He lived a full and active life. Jerry traveled the world.
Jerry will be laid to rest at Sharon Gardens, Valhalla, NY.
