James J. Murphy of Pleasantville, formerly of Thornwood, died April 29, 2008 peacefully at home surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 1, 1935 to the late Joseph P. Murphy, Sr. and Agnes Frances (Garvey) Murphy. He attended Brooklyn Tech High School and was a graduate of St. Francis College. Jim was married on August 24, 1957 to his high school sweetheart, Margaret Gibbons, in Good Shepherd Parish in Brooklyn, NY. He was employed by Verizon (formerly New York Telephone Company) for 38 years until his retirement in 1994. Jim is predeceased by his parents, his brother Francis X. Murphy and his granddaughters Hope and Elizabeth Duncan. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Margaret "Marge" (Gibbons) Murphy; his seven children: Brian G. Murphy of Wappingers Falls, NY and partner Lisa Lombardi, Kathleen G. (Murphy) Galligan and husband John Galligan of Wading River, NY, Dyane G. (Murphy) Barnett and husband Brian Barnett of Cary, N.C., Elaine G. Murphy and partner Letcher Johnson of Pleasantville, NY, John J. G. Murphy and wife Heather (Gann) Murphy of South Amboy, N.J., Christine G. Murphy and fiance Scott Duncan of North Salem, NY, and Andrew G. Murphy and fiance Assunta Iannino of Pleasantville, NY, eleven grandchildren: Brianna, Catherine and Sean Murphy, Joseph, Marissa and Sarah Galligan, Grace and Claire Barnett, Shane and James "J.D." Murphy and Samantha Murphy Duncan; his siblings Joseph Murphy, Jr., Thomas Murphy, Ann Marie Coleman, and Marian Doyle. Jim valued service to others. He was a basketball coach of parish programs, served on numerous parish councils and school boards, a Eucharistic Minister, involved in both the Cursillo and DDA movement and was a leader on many weekends. He volunteered at parish bazaars and other fundraisers. Jim founded the Fr. Dave Golf Outing, which benefits Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Valhalla, and this was a very special and dear event to him. He became an avid golfer after retiring and this brought him great joy. Jim was a devoted son, husband, dad, grandpa, pop-pop, brother, uncle and friend. He had a deep faith and trusted completely in God's will. He will be greatly missed. Reposing Wednesday 7 – 9 PM and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at Hawthorne Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday at llam at Holy Name of Jesus Parish, 2 Broadway, Valhalla, NY 10595. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
