James Vincent McGovern

McGovern, James Vincent - Garden City, NY

Born on July 11, 1939 to James A. and Mary Jane (née Logan) in Manhattan, Jim was a lifelong New Yorker who grew up in the Bronx and raised his family in White Plains. He is preceded in death by his parents, his devoted wife, Margaret (née Cronin) and his sister, Elaine Agnes.

Jim is survived by his children, James L. (Susan), Anne (Christopher) O’Donoghue, and Maureen (Shawn) McKenna; his grandchildren, Julia and Sabrina; Owen, Kevin and Brendan O’Donoghue; and Paige and Matthew McKenna; he is further survived by two sisters, Mary Jane (Richard) Jones of IA and Loretta (Michael) Reilly of NJ, and several nieces and nephews.

Jim graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School, St. John’s University and New York Law School. Upon passing the bar, he served as an Assistant District Attorney for Manhattan and worked in private practice for many years. He eventually fulfilled his dream and hung out his own shingle, representing clients well into his 70s.

Jim was very proud of his Irish heritage and could be found every Sunday afternoon listening to WFUV’s Music of the Irish. Jim enjoyed reading, following St. John’s basketball, swimming and discussing the law and current events. His favorite activity by far was visiting his grandchildren and regaling them with stories of growing up in the Bronx. We will miss his sharp wit and energetic conversation.
