James Chin, a cherished husband, devoted father, and respected civil engineer, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024, at the age of 79, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on August 23, 1945, in the Bronx, New York, James was a proud graduate of Manhattan College. Over the course of his distinguished career, he contributed to the development and infrastructure of New York City, working to build the foundation for the city's future.
His technical expertise, unwavering dedication, and steadfast work ethic earned him the admiration of his colleagues and the respect of all who had the privilege of working with him. In retirement, James’ love of backgammon and the Yankees winning was only surpassed by the love and dedication he had for his wife, Pia; his daughter, Tiffany; his son-in-law, Scott; and his beloved birds, Riley and Juju—all of whom survive him.
James is also survived by his extended family and friends who will remember him for his passionate energy, his loving support, his extensive use of microwaves, and his diverse anecdotes. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
A memorial service to celebrate James’s life will be held on November 20, 2024, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave, White Plains, NY 10601. All those who knew James are invited to join his family in honoring his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James’s memory to The Lung Cancer Research Foundation (https://give.lungcancerresearchfoundation.org/fundraiser/5928839), an organization dedicated to advancing research to prevent and cure this devastating disease.
