The family of Jack Berg mourns the passing of an incredible man, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and partner on Sunday, June 16th at the age of 96.
Jack was born on October 19, 1927 to Sarah and Harry in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from high school, he attended the US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. Jack attended NYU law school at night while working for Continental Grain Company, where Jack remained for 31 years. Jack rose the executive ranks using his expertise in maritime law, eventually becoming Vice President until he retired in 1986. Jack then transitioned into maritime arbitration, where he gained great renown and went on to serve as the President of the Society of Maritime Arbitrators from 1975 to 1979.
Jack is survived by his two children, Susan Shmerler (Bill) of Scarsdale, NY, and Peter Berg of St. Paul, MN, as well as his six grandchildren, Erica Nahmad (AJ), Bari Shmerler, Michael Berg (Kelsey), Kristin Berg, Trevor Berg, and Cameron Berg, and six great grandchildren. His legacy of loyalty and love lives on through all of them. Jack is also greatly mourned by his loving companion of 18 years, Linda Salamon. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Doris Berg, who passed away in 2005, as well as his brothers, Paul and Irving.
Jack will be fondly remembered by all for his kindness, humor, intellect, curiosity, zest for life, and his unwavering youthful spirit, even well into his 90's.
Jack and his family wish to acknowledge our profound gratitude to Lorna, Abby, and the late Lorna Voss, all of whom provided such compassionate care to him over the past several years.
A memorial service honoring Jack is being planned for the near future. Those who wish to make donations in Jack's honor may contribute to the US Merchant Marine Academy.
