Irving M. Cowle, PhD. Ed., loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather and passionate educator, formally of White Plains and Somers, NY, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Affectionately known as “Irv” by all who loved him, he was born on November 4, 1920 to the late Louis and Minnie Cowle in Utica, NY. Irv attended Buffalo State Teachers College where he excelled at basketball, soccer, swimming, and track and field, and received numerous awards and honors. He was subsequently inducted into the SUNY- Buffalo State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. After completing his Bachelor’s degree in education in 1942, he enlisted in the US Army. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946 holding the rank of First Lieutenant, Field Artillery Unit Commander. He earned 6 medals during his time in service. In 1949, Irv married his beloved wife Roslyn and settled in White Plains, NY. They founded the Elmwood Country Day School in 1957, and owned and operated Elmwood for the next 30 years. During that time, Irv gained a reputation as an authority on all facets of day camping. Irv’s distinguished career in education spanned forty years. He obtained a Master’s degree in mathematics and taught in the White Plains school district for 25 years. Toward the end of his tenure, he was city-wide coordinator in mathematics. During that time, he also attended Columbia University in the evenings and completed his Doctorate in education in 1967. Dr. Cowle subsequently joined the faculty of Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he received the Distinguished Teacher Award in 1982. He has also authored and published 5 books, and over 30 articles. Upon his retirement in 1987, Roz and Irv settled in Heritage Hills, Somers, NY, where they enjoyed many wonderful years with friends and family. Throughout his life, Dr. Cowle stayed active in athletics taking up racquetball at age 47. He participated in the Golden Masters Tournaments where he eventually won 60 regional and national trophies, and garnished a national ranking in his age group. Irving M. Cowle is pre-deceased by his father Louis, his mother Minnie, his brother Jerry, his sister Gloria and his son Lloyd. He is survived by his wife Roslyn, his sons Edward, Todd, and Ricky, his daughters-in-laws Donna and Debbie, along with eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Dr. Cowle’s funeral will be held on Thursday, December 5 th at Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne, NY. The service will begin at 12:00 pm, and the burial will follow at Sharon Gardens Cemetery, 273 Lakeview Ave, Valhalla, NY. Shiva will be observed on Thursday, December 5 th at 5 Renaissance Square, White Plains in the 8th floor common room from 1pm - 4pm. An additional Shiva will be observed on Friday, December 6 th at 5 Renaissance Square, White Plains, NY. in the 8th floor common room from 1pm - 4pm .
