Hyman D. Rutkovsky passed away at The Kensington in White Plains, NY during the evening of December 22, 2013 at the age of 95. He was born in Manhattan on March 27, 1918 to Louis and Celia Rutkovsky. He graduated from Seward Park High School at the age of 15, and then pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at New York University while working part-time at his father’s company, The National Boiler Parts Company. After graduating from NYU in 1940 at the age of 22, Hyman and his fiancé, Rebecca Cohen, married in Manhattan and shortly later followed a job opportunity in Worcester, MA at The Riley Stoker Corp. As an engineer at Riley, he designed a power plant for the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. His skill was quickly noticed by the United States Department of the Army, and was recruited to join and ultimately direct research, development and engineering at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, NJ. Mr. Rutkovsky was awarded many commendations and citations for his work and dedication to the Army. He also received letters of congratulations from the President, US Senators and US Congressmen upon the occasion of his retirement from the Department of the Army after 47 years of service.

Hyman is predeceased by his wife, Rebecca, of 61 years of marriage. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce (Eric) Efron of Helotes, Tx, and his son and daughter-in-law, Laurence and Sharon Rutkovsky and his granddaughter, Carly, and their two Havanese dogs Leo and LuLu whose weekly visits Hyman enjoyed so much.

A memorial service in honor of Hyman will be held on January 19, 2014 at 10:00AM at Congregation Emanuel-El of Westchester, 2125 Westchester Avenue East, Rye, NY 10580 (914-967-4382).
