Howard Daniel Newhard

Howard Daniel Newhard, Jr., beloved father and grandfather, died on July 1, 2016 at 89 years old, in New Rochelle, NY. He died of complications resulting from a torn aorta.

Howard was born on February 1, 1927, to Mary Kress Newhard and Howard Daniel Newhard, Sr. in Elizabeth, NJ. He served in the US Navy during WWII, and is a graduate of St. Benedict's Preparatory School and Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. His career highlights include Intelligence Officer with the CIA's Office of Special Operations during the Korean War, and 26 years with American Express (manager, D/M, G/M, and Director of Industry Relations in the Asia-Pacific region).

In 1962, he met and married the love of his life, Zeni Buhain. The couple lived in Okinawa for two years and Manila for 19 years before moving to Fort Myers, Florida. Howard lived in Fort Myers for 29 years. He found a spiritual home in St.Cecilia's Catholic Church, and was active in the parish, especially in the Brothers in Christ men's group, where he met some of his dearest friends. Howard lived his final 2 years at United Hebrew Geriatric Center of New Rochelle, NY. The entire staff of United Hebrew cared for Howard with exceptional grace, attention, and love until his final hours.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Marion Rettino, and his wife, Zenaida Buhain Newhard. He is survived by his brother, Richard A. Newhard, Sr., his four daughters (Maria Hood, Mariana Newhard, Michele Newhard and Christina Newhard), and three grandchildren (Daniel Hood, Sarah Hood, and Chloe Newhard-Schellenberg.)

There will be two memorial services for Howard: 1) on Wednesday, July 6, at 10:30 am, at United Hebrew Geriatic Center, 391 Pelham Road, New Rochelle, NY 10805; 2) at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, 5632 Sunrise Dr., Fort Myers, FL 33919, date TBD.
